Why is gut health so important
AND how does it affect your skin?

Hippocrates got it right centuries ago when he said “All disease begins in the gut“, and finally science is catching up to an age-old Naturopathic principle.

The research around the correlation between gut and skin health is piling up around us, and more and more people are becoming aware that their gut symptoms are not separate to the skin problems that they face (pun intended).

If you’re anything like my typical acne or eczema patient, you might have heard people talk about healing your gut to heal your skin, but don’t really understand exactly why that’s the case.

You might not have a lot of obvious gut symptoms yourself either, which makes it all the more confusing.

The thing is, there are lots of things that affect the health of the gut and compromise the integrity of the gut lining.

Once the gut lining is damaged, a cascade of inflammatory effects takes place, which in turn ends up affecting the skin and creating low-grade chronic inflammation in the deeper levels of the dermis.

This is an aspect of both acne and eczema presentations, and I think it’s time to deep dive together into what this means, how it eventuates, and what we can do to heal our guts and, in turn, our skin.
